Efforts to clear the shrouds of mystery from Yrgacheffe coffee have produced a little information on this intriguing washed Ethiopian. It is grown in the Kaffa region. The Yrgacheffe are a minority sect of Coptic Christians. Their coffee is grown at the extreme altitude of 8000 feet. The estate was formerly one of the summer retreats of the old Emperor Haile Selassie. Production is limited. Until recently, all had gone to Italy and Switzerland.
